About 42 girls in Solwezi have received scholarship from Kansanshi mining company under the Kwambula project at Solwezi Trades Training Institute.

The programme, which started in 2012, is aimed at providing entrepreneurial skills to local school leavers within Kansanshi mine’s catchment area.

And in this year’s intake, only female students have been enrolled with the objective of empowering the girl child because all along the majority were male students.

And speaking during the launch of the special girls’ intake, Solwezi district commissioner Rosemary Kamalonga said it was encouraging because the girl child was more vulnerable than the boy child and encouraged the students to set the standard for other girls.

She urged them to work hard and take every opportunity seriously that came their way and complete the training so that they contribute to the development of the country.

“You will only say the sky is the limit when you are educated,’’ Ms Kamalonga said.

She urged the students to stay away from vices that might hinder them from completing their training and destroy their future.

The district commissioner also commended Kansanshi mine for supplementing Government’s efforts on matters of education.

“My appeal to the mine management is that more girls should be enrolled in this programme to reduce unemployment among the girl child,’’ she added.

Speaking at the same event, Kansanshi mine public relations manager Godfrey Msiska urged the students to be focused in their studies and make full use of the programme.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Nkwanchi Munkodya thanked Kansanshi mine for the scholarships and pledged to work hard.

The training programme runs for three years with four months in each year being for classes while eight months for industrial attachment and work experience.
