KABOMPO District Council will soon kill all stray dogs roaming the townships to prevent the outbreak of rabies.
Council health inspector, Douglas Habinda, said the council will embark on the exercise this month to curb the increase in the number of dog bites.
Mr Habinda said that incidences of dog bites were a serious health threat that needed to be dealt with before lives were lost.
“The exercise will be carried out in conjunction with the Veterinary Department and the Zambia Police Service in the district,’’ he said.
Mr Habinda urged dog owners to have their pets vaccinated and registered at the council offices in order to prevent them from being killed.
“This is a legal requirement because according to the Control of Dogs Cap 247 of the laws of Zambia, every dog is supposed to be registered, vaccinated and confined by owners and for them to keep a maximum of two dogs per household,’’ he added.
