Put us on monthly allowance, demands freedom fighters
By ANDREW MUKOMA
SEVERAL freedom fighters in Livingstone has made several demands to the new government which needs to be met to lessen their sufferings.
Among the demands made are that the government should consider putting freedom fighters on monthly allowances, be exempted from paying water and electricity bills, provide them with funeral grants and have their houses painted.
District vice chairman Sylvester Simata made the demands on their behalf during this year’s independence celebrations graced by Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba.
Mr Simata said this is so considering the sufferings that freedom fighters are faced with in the country despite having liberated the country.
And Mr Sikumba who is also Livingstone Member of Parliament reminded residents that they should always remember that the freedom fighters, driven by patriotism, loyalty and love, put aside the instinct for self-preservation and risked their lives and those of their families to achieve the peace the country enjoys today.
Mr Sikumba said the freedom fighters came from different parts of the country putting their differences aside for the common good.
“This is an example to all of us as we emulate working together to take Zambia to greater heights by encompassing the one Zambia, one nation motto,” he said.
We must continue to carry the ideals and values of our forefathers and mothers. I call upon you to participate in upholding our national values and principles as enshrined in article 8 the constitution,” Mr Sikumba said.
