MOBITEL Limited, the parent company of Diamond Television, has taken legal action against outspoken socialite and media personality Mutale Mwanza, demanding damages for libel
The broadcasting company accused Mwanza of tarnishing its reputation through allegations of fraud and corruption.
According to a statement of claim filed with the Lusaka High Court, Mwanza made on November 9, 2024, a Facebook post where she reportedly described the Personality of the Year Awards (POTYAs) as a “scam,” using unflattering language to criticise the ceremony and its organisers.
Mobitel claimed the post was defamatory, painting the company as dishonest and engaged in fraudulent activities.
The company contended that these accusations had inflicted significant harm, including financial losses and reputational damage, both in Zambia and across the southern African region. Beyond financial compensation for libel, stress, and business losses, Mobitel is demanding a public retraction and a permanent court injunction to silence any further defamatory remarks from Mwanza.
The company’s legal claim argued that Mwanza’s statements were “false, baseless, and malicious,” leading to public ridicule and diminished trust among viewers and stakeholders.
Mobitel insisted these allegations have unfairly smeared its image as a credible and ethical broadcaster.
