PNUP disowns Hamududu over HH endorsement

THE Party for National Unity & Progress (PNUP) has distanced itself from its president, Highvie Hamududu’s endorsement for President Hakainde Hichilema for the 2026 general election.
In a statement on Thursday, PNUP secretary general Stella Chintu has clarified that no official decision had been made regarding the party’s position on alliances or endorsements.
“We have not resolved whether to go into a UPND or TONSE Alliance,” Ms Chintu said.
Ms Chintu’s clarification follows comments made by Mr. Hamududu earlier this week, when he publicly expressed support for President Hichilema, stating that the endorsement was PNUP’s official position.
However, the party leadership has quickly denied ever having decided to endorse President Hichilema and that the announcement by Mr Hadudu had been made without consulting the party leadership.
“The party is still in the process of evaluating all available options to ensure that any decision made is in the best interest of the people, the party, and our shared vision for a better Zambia,” Ms. Chintu saidd.
She said a task force had been set up in October to engage with potential political alliances, including UPND and UKA, but no final decisions have been made.
“PNUP remains committed to due process and collective decision-making. The National Operations Committee has not yet reached a final decision on any alliance or endorsement,” Ms. Chintu said.
The statement stressed the importance of transparency within the party, urging members and the public to disregard any endorsements made outside its official structures.
“The correct position of PNUP will be communicated through the appropriate party channels at the appropriate time,” Ms. Chintu assured.
