A PACT to promote and facilitating a conducive business environment for the private sector has been entered into between Government and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The agreement was signed between the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, and the USAID Business Enabling Project in Lusaka during the week.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary for Investment and Industrialisation, Mr Crusivia Hichikumba explained that the agreement was a testament to the shared commitment to creating an ecosystem where businesses could thrive.

Mr Hichikumba, speaking at the signing ceremony, noted that this was also aimed at creating an environment for businesses to innovate, and contribute to the nation’s economic development.

“As you may be aware, the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, and Industry is charged with the responsibility for formulating and implementing policies aimed at creating a conducive business environment for private sector growth,” he said.

Mr Hichikumba said the ministry was dedicated to driving economic progress through strategic collaborations and initiatives that support the private sector.

He said the government recognises that a robust and dynamic private sector is crucial for job creation, innovation, and sustainable economic growth.

Mr Hichikumba however said achieving this required an enabling environment where businesses can operate efficiently, access essential resources, and navigate regulatory frameworks with ease.

“The USAID Business Enabling Project has been a steadfast partner in our journey towards achieving these goals,” he said.

Mr. Hichikumba added that through the agreement, the government was establishing a framework for implementing programmes that would address key challenges faced by our business community.

He said the programmes would focus on streamlining regulatory processes as well as fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.

“This collaboration is also a reflection of our commitment to aligning with international best practices and leveraging global expertise to address local challenges,” he said.

Mr Hichikumba noted that the USAID Business Enabling Project brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be invaluable in the government efforts to create a more competitive and inclusive economy.
