A 19-MEMBER squad of Zambian football legends has left for Lilongwe to take on their Malawian counterparts in a festive season match.
The Zambian contingent was seen off at Football House by FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga, who urged them to represent the Zambian football family with pride and honour.
Kamanga expressed confidence that the legends would showcase the country’s rich football heritage during the much-anticipated clash. Among the legendary players heading to Lilongwe are stars from the post-2000 era, including 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winners Chintu Kampamba, Felix Katongo, Jonas Sakuwaha, Kalililo Kakonje, Hichani Himoonde, James Chamanga, and William Njobvu.
Also part of the squad are Clive Hachilensa, Billy Mwanza, Fackson Kapumbu, Buchizya Mfune, and Kennedy Nkethani. The full list is completed by Ignatius Lwipa, Nchimunya Mweetwa, and Justin Zulu, all of whom will add their experience and skill to the legendary team.
The two sides had met previously in 2023 as part of the Independence anniversary celebrations, with Zambia claiming a 2-1 victory at David Kaunda Stadium in Chipata. Goals for Zambia were scored by Clifford Mulenga and Ignatius Lwipa, while Jimmy Zakazaka netted the consolation for the Malawi greats.
The match is set to take place at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, with kickoff scheduled for 15:00 hours.
Veteran coach Patrick Phiri will lead the Zambian squad in the match, hoping to continue the team’s dominance in this friendly rivalry
