Government happy ECL won’t be on the ballot in 2026

GOVERNMENT has expressed happiness and support for the Constitutional Court’s ruling that has barred former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu from contesting the 2026 general elections.

Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa says the UPND had welcomed the decision, noting that it brought clarity and finality to a long-standing legal challenge.

“This verdict not only provides clarity and certainty to the law but also promotes the predictability of the law, effectively ending years of speculation and arguments among lawyers and citizens alike,” Mr. Mweetwa said.
