ZPL warns against hooligaism and unsportsmanship

THE Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has issued a stern warning regarding the increasing cases of hooliganism and unsportsmanlike conduct during league matches.
Recent incidents, including missile-throwing by fans at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium during the Week 15 Kitwe derby between Power Dynamos and Nkana FC, as well as misconduct in Week 17 matches at Railway Stadium in Kabwe and Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka, have raised serious concerns.
These actions have not only disrupted matches but also endangered the safety of all those present.
ZPL chairman, Kephas Katongo, emphasised that the league is committed to investigating these incidents thoroughly and taking strong action to preserve the integrity of Zambian football.
“The alarming rise in such behaviour is unacceptable and must be curbed immediately. We urge fans, coaches, players, and referees to conduct themselves in a manner that upholds sportsmanship,” Katongo said.
He added, “Football is about respect for the game, and everyone must accept the outcome in the spirit of fair play. As the ZPL is followed by fans across the continent, we must ensure that we protect the image of Zambian football.”
Katongo also called on security personnel at stadiums to enforce strict law and order, pointing out that some actions by fans are borderline criminal and must be treated as such.
He also reminded stadium authorities that the sale of beer in bottles is prohibited due to the potential safety risks it poses.
Addressing referees, Katongo stressed the importance of fair officiating. He warned that any referee found to be performing poorly or contributing to match disruptions would face consequences.
“ZPL will not hesitate to ban individuals, including referees, whose actions disrupt the game,” Katongo said. “With modern technologies in place, we are able to ensure accountability and transparency.”
