Minister of local Government Garry NKombo says anyone trading on top of a drainage should find an alternative trading area as to prevent another cholera outbreak in Zambia.
He says areas such as Kalunga Steel Trading space on Lumumba Road ,Munyaule Market and any other area that houses a drainage system in Lusaka is not a designated place to trade.
He says the Lusaka City Council is having difficulties to execute it’s duties of cleaning and deepening the drainage systems to ensure a smooth flow of rain water and Garbage.
He said the re-opening of Simon Mwewa Market which is next to City Market will provide 952 traders each with a trading space.
Speaking at the same press briefing Minister of Health Elijah Muchima stated that the sanitary situation in Lusaka is causing a Public Health Hazard to citizens and Government will not sit back and have another cholera pandemic outbreak.
He stated that Government is working tirelessly to prevent the spread of cholera,no one should involve politics in the clean up of the trading area and Munyaule Market should be closed with immediate effect” he said.
The Minister further stated that anyone refusing to vacate the area will face the law accordingly.
And Mr Kalunga, the sole proprietor of the Market and owner of Kalunga Steel stated during the briefing that that place was sold to him by the area councilor Masauso David Ngoma of Chimuka Ward 11 and he is aware that the supposed closure is due to the fact that a Car Park will be set up there by another trader.
He further stated that it is impossible for the council to give him an alternative trading place.
